Xbox Live programming director Larry Hyrb announced that the Xbox Live servers are going dark for scheduled maintenance on June 16, 2009.  They will be down from 12:01 AM PST time (3:01 AM EST and 7:01 UTC) for “up to 24 hours.”  This maintenance will include preparation for coming features, which will be implemented at a later date, including an avatar marketplace, Facebook/Twitter integration, and a new digital distribution system for full Xbox 360 games.

For Xbox 360 EndWar players, this maintenance downtime is occurring on a critical turn.  The servers will be unavailable for most of War 7 turn 23, leaving only a few hours before the end of the turn for two capital battles to be decided.  Additionally, the servers will be coming back online during the time that most of EndWar’s players in the Western Hemisphere will be asleep.

For the fourth time since the game’s release, the Theatre of War servers for the Xbox 360 are down, today on June 6th.  It is also the second time that the game has been unavailable during the weekend since in installation of double XP weekends.  So far, no announcement has been made from Ubisoft regarding the incident.  In addition to arriving during the weekend, the server outage is occurring on the turn that many JSF players were looking forward to attacking Moscow.

UPDATE: June 7th, servers are back up.  No compensation has been made.  It also appears that the territories don’t reflect the results of turn 12, as the JSF are now defending Rovaniemi instead of attacking Moscow after winning at Kurzeme.

QuidProQuo, Community Developer for Ubisoft, has released a statement explaining that the company is aware that the EndWar servers are down, and that they are working on the problem, which arose on May 27.  He also mentioned that when the servers are back up, the players will receive compensation for their missed playtime.

“I’m looking into some sort of compensation. I know the server guys have been looking into it, I’m being told there’s some sort of ‘replication’ problem, whatever that means. Just a heads-up though, I’m leaving for E3 today so my responses may be delayed because we’ll all be super busy during the show.

That said, just because I’ll be away doesn’t mean that there won’t be people monitoring the forums and working on the server issue. They may not post much but I assure you that they are reading your posts and in communication with the guys running the server to get things worked.”

UPDATE: May 30, the servers are back online.  It appears that there has been no compensation made.

A record-long war and a remarkably short war both come to an end today.

JSF Wins Fourth War PS3

After a record 102 long, grueling turns, the JSF has come out on top for the fourth war on the PS3.  The EFEC started out strong, taking many territories in both Russia and the U.S.  However, by turn 30, they showed signs of losing their steam, as the JSF and SPZ began to close in on either side.  At turn 54, Europe was reduced down to one, single territory, their capital, and the JSF was only three territories away from the 27-territory victory condition.  Over the next 50 turns, persistent stalemates plagued all three factions, and little advancements were made.  Finally, at turn 93, the JSF obtained the opportunity to attack Paris, and, after an eight-turn attack, finally captured it from the EFEC at the end of turn 101.

EFEC Wins Sixth War Xbox 360

War 6 for the Xbox played out much like War 5: the team which is given the better attacking front against Russia wins.  This time, that team was the EFEC, and they blitzed to Moscow in only three turns.  The SPZ successfully defended Moscow on assault at turn 4, but it was only delaying the inevitable.  The EFEC went on to win all three attack phases in a row, taking the “uncapturable city” in siege mode by 2% in wins.
